Astronomy for All

On the other side of the Pacific, Prof. Boonrucksar Soonthornthum, NARIT Executive Director and his team makes a considerably good progress today, deploying XXIX IAU General Assembly as a tool to expand NARIT's expertise in public outreach by meeting the head figures of the Office for Astronomy Outreach (OAO). The talk aims at connecting the OAO to SEA-ROAD (Southeast Asia Regional Office for Astronomy for Development) of which has been hosted by NARIT. In working together, there has been a great demand for more communications and networking from both sides. The both parties agree to come up with activities such as workshops to better understand the needs of each other to implement and execute public outreach platforms at a whole new level.

Prof. Boonrucksar also emphasizes that the ongoing public outreach activities in Thailand conducted by NARIT and its allies in an attempt of promoting and enhancing awareness in astronomy and related science have strengthened Thailand en route to the knowledge-based society as can be evidently seen in the increasing number of qualified schoolteachers as a result of NARIT's concrete public outreach programs.

The NARIT Executive Director also has a great concern for the general public especially those less privileged minorities as a talk on supplementing certain channels and features to NARIT's current infrastructure in order to help the disable with visual impairment to gain an access to astronomy. "Things like half-spheres for the blind with audio program or constellations drawn with continuous lines and different sizes of balls representing stars of different magnitudes will help them travel the Universe driven by imagination within a fingertip away. It is obvious and imperative that this kind of mechanism is one of our main goals to provide equal access to astronomy to all walks of life in our society and it seems appropriate that the talk with OAO with their extensive expertise of this platform will create a another milestone of public outreach in Thailand and SEA region" adds Prof. Boonrucksar
